President Bola Tinubu will open the African Counter-Terrorism Summit today in Abuja. A statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said the high-level summit, organized by Nigeria in collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) is programmed for Monday, 22 and Tuesday 23 April. The summit themed ‘Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Institution Building to Address the Evolving Threat of Terrorism’, aims to enhance multilateral counter-terrorism cooperation and reshape the international community’s collective response to terrorism in Africa through African-led and African-owned solutions.
The summit is expected to bring together heads of state and government, high-level government officials, representatives of international organizations and members of civil society to review the threat of terrorism on the continent and agree on strategic priorities and measures to address it.
The event will also foster deeper regional collaboration, enhance institutional capacity, and facilitate the exchange of best practices and knowledge to combat terrorism in Africa. Notable attendees include UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed; the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; and UNOCT Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, who will deliver the concluding remarks. The summit also aims to provide a platform for African countries to come together and address the evolving threat of terrorism, and promote peace and stability on the continent.
